Monti Aguirre is an activist, environmental anthropologist, film-maker and advocate who has worked for the past two decades in support of Latin American indigenous peoples’ rights. Co-producer and director of Amazonia: Voices From the Rainforest — a pivotal film that drew the world’s attention to the efforts of grassroots groups in the Amazon to defend their lives and their land — Monti works in a multifaceted way to support indigenous rights to self-determination, free and prior informed consent, and the right to sustainable livelihood and healthy environments. She is a staff member of International Rivers’ Latin America program where she works to support local movements for the protection of rivers, identify new dam projects in Latin America and examine their economic, social, and environmental impacts, and design strategies to counteract their effects. And, she is the Indigenous Peoples Rights Program Coordinator for the Socio-Environmental Fund CASA, collaborating with funder groups in South America to mobilize resources, support, and build capacities of grassroots environmental groups. At CPE, through our partnership with CASA and International Rivers, Monti Aguirre develops and directs US-sourced contributions to grassroots and indigenous community organizations in defense of human rights and the environment groups.
